It was Emberforge's standard neural band, not a full-body suit: in-game hits mapped straight onto her nerves, and the digital blade cutting her avatar's shoulder was about to sync. Maren forced a laugh—a bright sound that failed to reach her eyes—even as the virtual sun of the Ashen Wastes beat down on her character's face.
"Did you see that, chat?" Maren asked, her voice hitting a high register that commanded fifty thousand concurrent viewers. "The RNG gods are trying to murder us today. We are one hit away from a total wipe. Can we get some 'L's in the chat for my dignity?"
In the center of her vision, a prompt pulsed—a crimson window floating over a kneeling NPC. The character was a scavenger, eyes wide and watering, clutching a small, glowing glass health vial.
She moved to execute the command, but her hand stalled. The virtual fingers, intended to snatch the vial, hung suspended in the air, trembling inches above the scavenger's hands.
The screen didn't flash with loot or gold. Instead, a bruised, sickly purple UI flag slammed into the center of her vision:
