Chapter 1 — The Morning Steep
The silver scoop felt familiar in Petra’s hand as she leaned over the wooden counter, the shop’s early stillness broken only by the rhythmic scrape of metal on metal. She worked with a practiced, steadying focus, her thumb tracing the cool, embossed symbol on the side of the jasmine container. There was a particular comfort in the resistance of the dried blossoms, a papery texture that promised a bright infusion once the heat took them.
She dipped the tool into the vessel, pulling up a precise mound of pale, curled flowers. With a decisive motion, she leveled the top against the rim, ensuring the measurement was exact. The precision was a tether. As the excess leaves spilled into the container with a soft, clinking rustle, a sudden drift of aroma rose to meet her—the dry, floral sweetness of jasmine hitting the ceramic steeper. The scent was clean, lacking any of the damp, earthy notes of the mist clinging to the grain-tower’s exterior.
The fragrance settled in the back of her throat, slightly astringent and promising. She deposited the leveled mound into the vessel, the small impact making a hollow, percussive sound against the glaze. Everything was in its proper place. The canisters were straightened, the hearth was beginning to pulse with a low, steady warmth, and the morning ritual was unfolding exactly as it should. She reached for a fresh tin, her fingers seeking the familiar chill of the metal.
The silver scoop rested on the wooden counter with a muted click. Petra Finch stepped away from the jasmine, her boots finding the uneven rhythm of the floorboards as they creaked under her weight. The morning stillness of the shop felt thin, a fragile membrane that required the hearth to thicken it.
